Subcellular localization

basal body, cilia, transition zone

Functional category

  • Ciliary assembly/disassembly
  • Signaling (Hedgehog, GPCRs, ion channels)
  • Ciliary membrane
  • Transition zone

Function

GPR161 increases cAMP levels, establishing the basal cAMP gradient and activation of PKA. Repression of Shh sig ling by determining the processing of Gli3 to its repressor form (23332756).

Loss of the primary cilium-localized G protein-coupled receptor GPR161 causes ectopic, excessive hedgehog signaling in the mouse neural tube and fully penetrant exencephaly.

Linkage between Fuz and Gpr161 genes regulates sonic hedgehog signaling during mouse neural tube development.
