Function
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) stimulates ciliary elongation through Rho-actin dependent modulation of anterograde intraflagellar trafficking. This elongation is enhanced in the presence of interleukin-6 (IL-6) ( 24330727). IL-6/STAT3 promotes regeneration of airway ciliated cells from basal stem cells( 25136113) IL-6 at 1000 pg/mL significantly decreased ciliary beat frequency. IL-6 stimulated the generation of ciliated vs. secretory cells from basal cells. In Il-6 null mice regenerate fewer ciliated cells after injury. Loss of primary cilia resulted in reduced IL-6 protein levels. (17888432, 25136113, 38188300)
