Function
Importin alpha (KPNA2) has conserved localization in human epithelial primary cilia and Xenopus laevis epidermal multiciliated cells. Regulates ciliogenesis and cilia length maintenance in a palmitoylation-dependent manner. Key ciliary proteins CEP164 and ARL13B are candidate binding partners via their NLS. Disruption of importin alpha palmitoylation causes nephrogenesis defects in Xenopus (PMID:41017282). Importin alpha (KPNA2) localizes to human epithelial primary cilia and Xenopus multiciliated cells. Regulates ciliogenesis and cilia length via palmitoylation. Disruption causes nephrogenesis defects in Xenopus.
Model organism evidence
Here, we identify that the nuclear adapter protein importin α-1 (encoded by KPNA2 in humans; hereafter importin α) has conserved localization in human epithelial primary cilia and Xenopus laevis epidermal multiciliated cells.
