Function
Rab effector-related protein, regulates protein concentration by removal of membrane proteins from the cilium. Depletion results in accumulation of sig ling proteins in the ciliary membrane, including Smo. Interacts with activated Rab34, Rab36, Rab12 and Rab40B (23264467). Interacts with the LRRK2- phosphorylated forms of Rab8A and Rab10 (29125462). Enhances pRab10 clustering on pericentriolar membranes to suppress ciliogenesis (30398148).
Model organism evidence
Rab10 phosphorylation strengthens its intrinsic ability to block ciliogenesis by enhancing binding to RILPL1.
Affinity enrichment mass spectrometry revealed that the primary ciliogenesis regulator, RILPL1 specifically interacts with the LRRK2-phosphorylated forms of Rab8A and Rab10, whereas RILPL2 binds to phosphorylated Rab8A, Rab10, and Rab12.
