Function
Rab effector-related protein that exhibist dy mic localisation, regulates protein concentration by removal of membrane proteins from the cilium.. Depletion results in accumulation of sig ling proteins in the ciliary membrane, including Smo. Interacts with activated Rab34 and Rab36 (23264467). Binds to phosphorylated Rab8A, Rab10, and Rab12. As it binds Rab8a much stronger than RILPL1, RILPL2 might be a key effector specific for pRab8A (29125462).
Model organism evidence
Affinity enrichment mass spectrometry revealed that the primary ciliogenesis regulator, RILPL1 specifically interacts with the LRRK2-phosphorylated forms of Rab8A and Rab10, whereas RILPL2 binds to phosphorylated Rab8A, Rab10, and Rab12.
The Rilp-like proteins Rilpl1 and Rilpl2 regulate ciliary membrane content.
